Normal Childbirth and Labor-DMC |
Well Monday was my first formal lecture to 10 CSU students about normal labor and birth. Goal #1 - accomplished, and I survived! I was quite nervous for the first few minutes but as I started talking and interacting with the students, my nervousness seemed to get better. I met the Objective #3 "Link philosophy of education with planning and development of a learning module", as I developed a PowerPoint with learning objectives, bulleted points about the important topics to be discussed and I also provided visual aids so that the students could actually become familiar with. My learning philosophy is structured around recognizing different learning styles and ways to meet the goal of learning. I know that there are some students that are very visual, so therefore I attempted to not only describe concepts but also incorporate pictures and hospital equipment into my lecture. The students were so excited to learn and ask questions. It was a great first experience! I don't think I can upload PowerPoints to this blog, so I just took a picture of my Objectives for the class.
Dinorah, I can see you are doing just fine in meeting our course objectives. Keep up the good work and just keep posting your thoughts, experiences, reflections, etc. When I think back, I remember the "nervous" you describe. It will honestly go away so fast that you'll have to stop and think about it to recall what it was like! I like that you are considering different learning styles. I learned to do that the hard way. I'm VERY visual. But my son is an auditory learner and it would drive me CRAZY that he would have mostly worthless notes when it came time to study. He did fine anyway - a real puzzle to me. Then I coerced him into signing up for a college level online course. It was a long time ago and the online course was ONLY text-based reading materials. He flunked! Couldn't make himself do the work and couldn't retain the materials when it was only reading. He didn't apply himself because it was pitiful boring to him. When he ran into similar situations in later classes, he learned to record the lectures and/or somehow get an audio version of the learning materials (even if he had to create them himself). His BS degree (go figure) is in audio production for the film industry... a niche he could do well in with his particular learning style.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!
